His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.” (John 9:20)
We are all born with spiritual blindness. It is only when God reveals Himself to us and we come to Him that our eyes are truly opened and we can see. But it is our choice. What will we choose? Will we choose men or God?
Consider the Life of King David
David was a man after God’s own heart. He was a great and humble king who credited God for his success.
Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?” (1 Chronicles 17:16)
Under God’s guidance and blessing, David and his army defeated foe after foe. But eventually he became blind to his own pride. Taking pride in the strength of his army, David decided to take a census. He began to rely more in the strength of his men than in the strength of God. God brought consequences upon David who, admitting his sin against the Lord, chose wisely.
Either three years of famine, or three months of devastation by your foes while the sword of your enemies overtakes you, or else three days of the sword of the Lord, pestilence on the land, with the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the territory of Israel. Now decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me. Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let me fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is very great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.” (1 Chronicles 21:12-13)
All choices have consequences. Like David, will we choose the consequences of men or God? If we choose the world are we not like those who mock the poor?
Whoever mocks the poor insults his Maker; he who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished. (Proverbs 17:5)
There will be consequences. Satan is waiting to destroy us.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:10)
Satan delights in any choice that is not God. We must not remain blind. We must choose God and live lives as if He is returning to us today.
And be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. (Luke 12:36)
Even God’s sword of justice is more merciful than that of men. Come to Him, repent, and live your life in patient expectation. Let God overcome your spiritual blindness.
