Finding God Amidst Life’s Noise

whisper in an ear

Do you struggle finding God amidst life’s noise? This morning, I awoke to the familiar cacophony of city life. Before my eyes even fluttered open, the sounds of the world outside filled my senses. The rumble of city trucks echoed through the streets as workers continued their efforts to repave our road. Overhead, the whir of a low-flying helicopter—likely a life flight—cut through the morning air, its urgent mission either heading to or departing from the nearby hospital. In the background, the steady hum of highway traffic drifted through the woods, a reminder of the ceaseless movement of life beyond our quiet neighborhood.

But then, amidst all the noise, something else caught my attention—a sweet, faint chirp from a small bird, gently offering its own “good morning” from across the room. It was in this moment that I felt the Lord speaking to me.

The world is busy. Every minute, we are bombarded with the sounds and demands of life. Yet, how often do we stop to notice just how loud life has become? Have we grown so accustomed to the constant noise that we no longer realize how overwhelming it is? This morning, as I emerged from the peacefulness of sleep, I was acutely aware of the world around me. The noise was undeniable, and it was easy to focus on the clamor. But then, out of the other ear, I noticed that bird’s song. It was soft, easy to overlook, and yet, it pierced through the noise.

That bird’s song became, for me, a symbol of the still, small voice of God. He is always calling to us, but the difference between hearing His voice and allowing it to be drowned out by the world lies in our focus and intention.

What Are You Listening To?

The world woos us every day with its promises of to-do lists, projects, and the pursuit of purpose through busyness. If we aren’t careful, we may miss the voice of God altogether. Hebrews 3:7-9 reminds us:

“Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,
‘Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
on the day of testing in the wilderness,
where your fathers put me to the test
and saw my works for forty years.’”

Dear sister, what are you listening to today? Do you struggle finding God amidst life’s noise? Are you attuned to the constant hum of the world, or are you seeking the gentle whisper of God’s voice? Let us strive to be intentional in our focus, to quiet the noise, and to listen for Him. In the midst of life’s busyness, may we always seek, hear, and follow His voice. I have a FREE 5 day devotional to help you be intentional about hearing from God.
