Fear can hold us back from stepping into the fullness of life God intends. Many of us hesitate to grow deeper in Christ or share the Gospel. Fear of the unknown, not knowing exactly what to do, or feeling unprepared can paralyze us. But faith calls us forward, even when the path seems uncertain. Choosing faith over fear means taking intentional steps to grow in Christ, trusting God will guide us every step of the way.
The Cost of Sitting on the Fence
Fear often convinces us that we don’t have enough time, discipline, or energy to pursue spiritual growth. We tell ourselves, “I’ll start tomorrow” or “I’ll get to it eventually.” Yet, when we remain on the fence, we rob ourselves of the abundant life Jesus died to give. We also rob others of the blessings God wants to release through us.
Consider the rich young ruler in Matthew 19:16-22. He hesitated to follow Jesus fully because he feared losing his security. His indecision cost him the life Jesus was offering. Similarly, when we delay stepping into maturity or sharing our faith, we miss the opportunities God has prepared.
Courage is a Choice, Not a Feeling
Stepping into faith doesn’t require absence of fear—it requires choosing courage in spite of it. Joshua 1:9 reminds us, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
We can take small, deliberate steps: consistent time in God’s Word, prayer, silence, and fellowship with other believers. These disciplines cultivate spiritual maturity. They also prepare us to share the Gospel naturally and confidently. Fear may never disappear entirely, but faith grows when we act in obedience.
Following Biblical Examples
The early disciples faced fear every day, yet they chose faith over fear. Peter stepped out of the boat onto stormy waters (Matthew 14:28-31). Paul boldly preached in hostile cities (Acts 16:25-34). They didn’t have all the answers, but they trusted God’s presence and power.
We, too, can take courageous steps in spiritual growth. It might be dedicating 15 minutes to Scripture daily, inviting a friend to Bible study, or sharing a personal testimony. Each step builds faith muscles and strengthens our confidence in Christ.
