It feels like quicksand.
Things are foggy.
I can’t seem to focus.
I feel restless.
And worst of all—I feel far from God.
This is what spiritual dryness looks like for me. And I know I’m not the only one. Maybe you’ve felt it too. You love Jesus, but you’re tired. Distracted. A little numb. You go through the motions, but your heart isn’t in it.
Overcoming spiritual dryness isn’t always about doing more. Sometimes, it begins with admitting that something feels off. That heaviness you can’t explain? It might be a sign your soul is craving a deeper connection with the Lord.
It Feels Like Chains
When I’m in that dry place, it feels like I’m bound up—stuck in earthly chains that keep me from fully living in the freedom Christ offers.
I struggle to connect with God. His Word feels dull. Prayer feels like a chore. Everything feels… off.
Spiritual dryness sneaks in when I get lazy with the things that matter most. When I let the world demand all my time and attention. When I forget to guard my time with Jesus.
But even though I feel far from God—He is never far from me.
Overcoming spiritual dryness starts with remembering that truth.
He has not left. He has not changed. And He still wants to meet with me right here.
When Everything Feels Boring
One of the biggest symptoms for me is what I call “spinning.”
Everything starts to feel boring.
Scrolling through my phone doesn’t help.
I wander from one thing to the next.
Even attempts to “get inspired” fall flat—nothing sticks.
That’s a red flag. A sign that I’ve disconnected from the true source of life and joy.
For me, God used a moment in a shopping mall to call me back to Him.
That encounter realigned everything.
It reminded me that my life isn’t about me—it’s about what He wants to do in and through me.
Overcoming spiritual dryness doesn’t require a lightning bolt moment.
Sometimes, it just means sitting quietly with an open Bible.
Or listening in silence for God’s still, small voice.
Come Back to the Living Water
Here’s the good news: it’s not too late.
If you’re feeling dry, disconnected, or apathetic—it’s not the end of the story.
You can begin again.
Just one small step at a time.
Open your Bible. Read one chapter.
If that feels like too much, don’t force it.
Just be still. Listen.
God promises in His Word: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
He’s still near.
He still speaks.
Draw near to Him—and He will draw near to you.
Overcoming spiritual dryness is possible.
You don’t have to do it alone.
If you’re looking for support, I invite you to join me inside Watered By the Word.
We offer daily Scripture readings—sometimes in audio form—so you can receive the Word even on the hard days.
Let’s walk this road back to renewal together.
